Weekly #71

Constant Contact Message from 7/27/2021

Hello everybody!

When I was a seminarian, a pastor at a parish where I spent the summer would say, “Everything slows down in the summer.” His staff would laugh, roll their eyes and whisper to me, “He doesn’t know what he’s talking about!” There is a certain rhythm to parish life that follows the liturgical year (Advent, Christmas, Lent, Easter, Ordinary Time) and, also, the school calendar. Things don’t really slow down in the summer, they just change. We have some breathing room as we pass through Ordinary Time and summer vacation, but it lets us focus on the bigger picture, planning, and preparation. Of course, in the midst of construction for the past two summers and with the pandemic, that rhythm has been a bit upended, but I am glad to see many of our staff taking some time off. We all need to relax, renew, and recharge from time to time. I hope you have been able to do so, as well.

A number of you continue to show concern and ask about my back. I am grateful for the prayers and support this past year. Through surgery, recovery, and rehab, you have encouraged and sustained me. I met with both my doctor and my surgeon last week and everything is going great! It was possible with the fusion that I might not get to go backpacking again, but my surgeon gave me permission to do a shorter backpacking trip (or, as a parishioner said, “So, you convinced your surgeon to let you go.”) and I have been preparing by hiking around with my backpack on. I started with 15 pounds in the pack and am up to 35 pounds. I have scheduled a trip to Oregon in August with five days on the trail. I am looking forward to it and am immensely grateful to God for the opportunity.

With all that is coming in August and September, I am also looking forward to the Summer Social sponsored by the Knights of Columbus. This is a big undertaking and will be a special celebration this year for all of our parish families. I hope you will join me on Saturday, August 21, for some fun together!

God bless you!

Peace,

Fr. Jeff

Fall Bible Study on Exodus with Dr. Scott Shuler: The Fishermen are excited to announce the next installment of our Monday night bible study. Following last fall’s study in Genesis, we will be looking at the book of Exodus, in which God’s people are led out of slavery and into new life. As we study this ancient story, we will touch on what it means to be “saved,” learn how to depend on God in difficult circumstances, and why the Ten Commandments are not so much a set of rules for us to follow but as insight into who God is and who we are. We will meet on Monday nights in Schindler Hall from 7:00-8:15 p.m. beginning September 13 through Thanksgiving. The study is open to both men and women of all ages. All sessions will be audio recorded and made available if you miss a session, however, it will not be live streamed. If interested, contact Joe Gates at (502) 544-9391 or mrjoegates@gmail.com

You Are Invited! Inquire About The Catholic Faith Through The R.C.I.A. Process: Have you attended Mass for years with your Catholic spouse and feel ready to explore the teachings of the Catholic faith more fully? Has your child's attendance in the Parish Religious Education Program or St. Patrick School led you to an interest in Catholicism? Are you wondering about life’s deeper meaning and your life’s purpose? Wherever you are on your spiritual journey, you are invited to “come as you are.” Come and ask questions and learn about the Catholic faith. Find out if the time is right for you to enter the process that leads to the celebration of the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) and your entry into full communion with the Catholic faith. There are no obligations. The RCIA meets from 6:45 to 8:15 p.m., Mondays starting August 16. For more information, contact Tim Grove at (502) 719-0362 or tgrove@stpatlou.org.

Sponsors Needed In The RCIA Process At St. Patrick: Every year, men, women, and young adults come to the RCIA process wanting to establish a new or renewed relationship with God and a faith community in the Catholic tradition. Sponsors are always needed to journey with these “inquirers.” Sponsors join the RCIA process in early November and serve as spiritual companions to the inquirers, who many times seek entry into full communion with the Catholic faith through the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist. Sponsors serve November through April as hospitable and welcoming representatives of the parish. Training is provided. Even for sponsors, the RCIA process is a wonderful experience of renewed faith and a deepened spiritual life. If you are feeling called to this form of service, contact Tim Grove, coordinator of the RCIA, at (502) 719-0362 or tgrove@stpatlou.org.
