Weekly #56

Constant Contact Message from 4/13/2021

Hello, everybody!

You may have heard the announcement at masses this weekend, but I want to share the news that Archbishop Kurtz has appointed Fr. Steven to become the pastor of St. Thomas and St. Monica parishes in Bardstown and serve as the priest chaplain to Bethlehem High School. We have been blessed by Fr. Steven and the many gifts he brings to the service of God’s people and I have especially appreciated his friendship. This transition will happen on June 16, 2020. While we will have the opportunity to show our gratitude and say goodbye later, please join me in congratulating Fr. Steven and keeping him in your prayers.

To serve the needs of our communities, Archbishop Kurtz has appointed Dcn. Quan Nguyen to be our next associate pastor following his ordination, which will be on May 29. I have spoken with Dcn. Quan and he is eager to return to St. Pats and St. Boniface and to get to know, love, and serve you better. He’ll have the chance to introduce himself to those of you who may not have met him yet, but I look forward to welcoming and working with him. Please also keep him in your prayers as he prepares for his ordination and then his arrival here on June 16.

We have a number of upcoming opportunities to live out our faith as disciples of Jesus. Space is available, so you can sign up today. The Backroom Tour of the Church on April 19 will give behind the scenes insights into how and why we celebrate the source and summit of our faith, the Eucharist, and the rich meaning of our spaces and liturgical celebrations. In the midst of the divisions we feel in our society, church, and families, Communicating Across Divides-How to Talk About Difficult Issues will provide skills and strategies to foster respect, civility, and unity on April 22 in our church space. We have had a record number of donors for our recent blood drives and want to keep that going to help those in need! Please sign up for the next blood drive on April 25. I am also excited to have our First Communion celebrations on April 23/24. Many thanks to all of those who have helped prepare and pray for our children for this significant moment in their journey of faith. Please continue to keep our first communicants and their families in your prayers. Info on these and other opportunities are below.

Finally, I was heartened to hear the goal in Kentucky to remove many of our restrictions for gathering and social distancing. If at all possible and if you haven’t already done so, I encourage you to get a Covid-19 vaccination shot as soon as you can to help our state reach that goal. In seeing so many of you for the first time in a year after getting your shots, the joy and expectation in your hearts and for our community is palpable. We are looking forward and planning for a fuller participation in the Eucharist for our whole parish family. Archbishop Kurtz’s committee on Covid-19 will review the situation and guidance for our Archdiocese on April 22. I expect updates and steps for reducing restrictions sometime following that meeting. We continue to maintain all of our safety and health procedures until we can make a change. Thank you for your help and understanding in all we have done and as we move toward a more open future.

God bless you and may the joy of the Easter Season fill your hearts and homes!

Peace,

Fr. Jeff

Registrations still open for Communicating Across Divides: How to Talk About Difficult Issues on Thursday, April 22 from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. in

St. Patrick Church: Many of us deeply feel the divisiveness of our time. We long to have bridge-building conversations about polarizing issues and yet when we try, we end up frustrated, angry, and wondering how "they" (whoever "they" are) can possibly believe what they believe, say what they're saying, support who or what they support. Not knowing how to navigate these conversations is particularly painful when “they” are people we love. This workshop will help:

  • Identify ways to maintain connection so that both parties have a chance to speak honestly and be heard
  • Move from “us” and “them” to a greater sense of shared vision
  • Cultivate win-win conversations

This two-hour workshop from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., Thursday, April 22 in the church, will be led by Cory Lockhart. Cory is a teacher, artist, public speaker, and peacemaker. She facilitates workshops for teens and adults on nonviolence and nonviolent communication and also helps groups to navigate difficult conversations. Cory was the 2016 recipient of the Ursuline Sisters of Louisville Angeline Award. She will introduce participants to the Nonviolent/Compassionate Communication (NVC) framework, which explores strategies for finding connection across divides, while standing firmly in our own values and integrity. Contact Tim Grove at tgrove@stpatlou.org or (502) 719-0362 to register. There is no fee. Sponsored by St. Patrick's Issues Forums Team.

Register Now for: Walking in My Shoes: A Challenge to Eradicate Racism: St. Patrick will host a five-part series on consecutive Thursdays in May/June to draw attention to the history of racism in our community, country, and world. We will be following a framework entitled “Walking in My Shoes,” which has the endorsement of Archbishop Joseph Kurtz and the Archdiocese of Louisville’s Office of Multicultural Ministries. Click HERE for the flyer that contains all the details.
