A Message from Nathan Sturtzel

For many of us, music stirs the soul and connects us to something greater, something profound. It is highly spiritual. The significance of music in scripture is well-documented. St. Paul writes in Ephesians 5:19, “be filled with Spirit, speaking to one another in Psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord.”

I often compare Catholic education to a musical symphony. Both take amazing effort, with so many moving parts, to make something beautiful and extraordinary. Symphony derives from the Greek word symphonia or symphonos, meaning “agreement or concord of sound” or “harmonious.” In Catholic education, clergy, faculty, staff, parents, children, and community members work together in harmony, for an agreed upon and critical mission: to study and apply the teachings of Jesus and His Church in our own lives and in the world.

This week marks our annual celebration of Catholic education, Catholic Schools Week. It’s an opportunity to reflect on the mission of the Church through education, and the wonderful gifts so many share to make this endeavor something profoundly spiritual and life-giving. For all reading this bulletin today, you have had some hand in the gift of Catholic education at St. Patrick. Thank you for your contributions to “sing and make melody with your heart to the Lord.”

Last week the National Catholic Education Association released 7 unique qualities of Catholic education (NCEA, 2024). As St. Patrick’s principal, I am proud to reflect on each, and say with confidence that our St. Patrick Catholic community continues to be exceptional in these areas. You might think of it as a 7-movement symphony!

1. A Tradition of Excellence: Since 1993, St. Patrick has held an unwavering commitment to academic excellence, spiritual growth, and community service. Our enrollment has more than tripled since that inaugural year with Fr. Jack Schindler and Dr. Mary Beth Bowling, and our campus continues to grow and evolve to serve our parishioners and their children.

2. Faith-Focused Learning: St. Patrick is dedicated to nurturing the whole person—mind, body, and spirit. Our parish school provides opportunities to showcase the integration of family and faith into every aspect of education, fostering a deep and meaningful connection between students and their spiritual journey.

3. Strong Community Bonds: St. Patrick is a vibrant community where students, parents, teachers, and staff come together in a supportive and nurturing environment to love and learn as Jesus taught us. Lifetime friendships are formed here. Ask many why they chose St. Patrick or why they remain committed to its mission, and they’ll respond “our community!”

4. Commitment to Service: Inspired by the teachings of Christ, St. Patrick instills a sense of responsibility and compassion in our students. This week we can celebrate countless service projects and outreach initiatives undertaken by our school and parish families, positively impacting the wider community year after year.

5. Holistic Education: We take pride in providing a holistic education in partnership with each family that goes beyond academics. In 2024, this takes center stage with the needs of our youth, but it’s always been our approach. St. Pats’ faculty and staff focus on character development, moral values, and the formation of responsible citizens who contribute meaningfully to society.

6. Inspirational Leadership: Catholic Schools Week is a great time to acknowledge and appreciate the dedication of our school and parish leaders, our talented and dedicated teachers and staff, and our passionate and selfless volunteers. This commitment to fostering a love of learning and a strong foundation in our Catholic faith is the driving force behind the success of St. Patrick.

7. Vibrant Celebrations: While we reflect often, we also love to celebrate! From special liturgies and prayer services to fun and engaging activities, this week and all school year long we hold events that bring joy and enthusiasm to our students and the St. Pats community.

Thanks to all for helping make such beautiful music for the Lord through the work of Catholic education. Happy Catholic Schools Week!
