Stages of Life
Conception & Birth thru Childhood
"...in the divine image He created him; male and female He created them" genesis 1:27
From birth onward, the parents become the child's primary teacher and role model on how to know, love, and serve God. Children learn by imitation. Recognizing this, parents have a duty to model the Christian virtues and values of faith, love, charity, and respect.
Adolescence
Beginning the Journey toward Adulthood
Adolescence is the stage when each person begins the process of moving toward adulthood. It is a time of questioning and discerning. It is a time of vulnerability when peer and cultural influences can dominate behavior and choices. It is a time when the person begins to form a mature conscience for dealing with life's issues and challenges. The Catechism of the Catholic Church #2228 teaches that this stage is also a time when parents, guided by love and respect, should assist the adolescent in exercising the proper use of reason, conscience, and free will along with the journey.
Young Adult Life
A Journey of Self Discovery
Young Adult life is a stage filled with self discovery and the exercise of God's gift of free will as one explores lifestyles and career paths. In fact, the Catechism of the Catholic Church #2230 reminds us of our right to determine our own career and state of life. However, with every right, there are challenges. Young adults are often challenged by what is considered acceptable by society versus what is considered acceptable within Catholic teaching. The Church encourages young adults to consider how their choices on this journey will grow their faith and reflect the "new life" given to them at Baptism.
Adult Life
Living a Faith filled life in the modern world
Adult life [whether single, married, or the religious state] has moments of love and peace, as well as, moments of struggle and pain. For example, many adults struggle to follow Catholic teaching when it opposes the accepted practices of modern society. The Catechism of the Catholic Church #1717 teaches that Christ understood that life is filled with many struggles. It notes that The Beatitudes are Christ's promises of hope for those facing difficult situations. In fact, The Beatitudes conclude with Christ's promise of eternal life in Heaven for those who suffer as a result of faithfully following Him.
Aging, Illness, and End of Life
Preparing for the journey home to god
Adults and their families often struggle with aging, illness, and end of life. These struggles can be heart wrenching and made more difficult when accepted societal and medical practices conflict with Catholic teaching. The Gospels frequently speak of Christ's care and concern for those suffering in body and spirit. In imitation of Christ, the Church advocates for the sacred and dignified treatment of life at every stage. The Catechism of the Catholic Church #2280 reminds us, "We are stewards, not owners, of the life God has entrusted to us. It is not ours to dispose of."
